People say that little girls are made out of sugar, spice, and everything nice. Although this may be true, but sometimes I, as a mother of a 4 year old girl, find the mix just doesn't go too well together. There have been days when there wasn't a lot of sugar, just a big kick of hot, strong, spices that literally burns both my logic and my soul. Yesterday was one of those days.
The morning started off really well, with a few cuddles and sweet talks. Come breakfast time and the drama started. And it kept on going until the afternoon. When I said drama I meant screaming and yelling, with tears that could fill up a bucket. I tried talking to her gently. I tried to calm her down by hugging her close and stroking her hair gently with my hand. It worked for five minutes, but as soon as something didn't go as she wanted, she started yelling and screaming again. Hubby tried to talk her out of it by raising his voice and said that kind of behaviour is unacceptable. But she kept screaming. (It's worth noting that he does not do this often. He's usually very gentle and very patient with her).
So I decided to take matters into my own hand. I locked myself and her in the bathroom and tried talking eye to eye. It didn't work. Tried to give her a time out, also didn't work. After about 15 minutes in the bathroom, hubby walked in and she miraculously was able to calm down while hugging her daddy tight. The tantrum didn't stop there. It continued throughout the day, with a lesser scale, but still very upsetting.
Irritated, I told hubby "I really don't understand her. I am emotionally tired and upset." But later that night, I was thinking... What will happen in 10 years from now? When she becomes a teenager, will she find me a safe place for her to talk? Will she be comfortable confiding in me about boys? Will she be honest with me about her struggles? These thoughts gave me a chill. And so I looked at her peaceful sleeping face, stroked her hair gently, and whispered "I love you."
